Sclerotherapy Post-Care Instructions
Immediately after treatment:
- Wear your compression stockings or wraps continuously for the first 24 hours, then during the day for 1–2 weeks (or as directed)
- Walk regularly — short walks (10–15 minutes every hour or two) help improve circulation and prevent clot formation
- Avoid strenuous activity (running, heavy lifting, high-intensity workouts) for 3–5 days
- Avoid hot baths, saunas, or hot tubs for at least one week — heat can cause veins to dilate and slow healing
- Keep treated areas clean and dry; you may shower with lukewarm water after 24 hours
- Do not apply lotions, oils, or creams to treated areas for the first 24 hours unless advised
- Avoid direct sun exposure or tanning on treated areas for 2 weeks to prevent hyperpigmentation
Common Side Effects
It’s normal to experience some mild, temporary effects after treatment, including:
- Mild redness, swelling, or bruising at injection sites (resolves within days to a week).
- Tenderness or itching along the treated veins
- Small raised bumps or firmness under the skin.
- Temporary darkening (hyperpigmentation) of treated veins — may last several weeks or months.
- Tiny blood vessels (“matting”) near injection sites (usually temporary)
